Night Filter privacy policy
Night Filter collects nothing. It has no internet access, keeps only its own settings on your phone, and shares nothing with anyone.
Who we are
Night Filter is made by Orionian, the app studio of Intelliworks Inc. In this policy, “we” means Orionian and Intelliworks Inc., and “the app” means Night Filter.
What the app collects
Nothing. The app doesn't collect, record or share any personal data or any data about how you use it. In particular, it has:
- no internet permission, so Android doesn't let it connect to anything, us included;
- no account or sign-in;
- no analytics, crash reporting, advertising or advertising IDs;
- no third-party services. Its only libraries are Android's own (AndroidX), Kotlin's, and Google Play Billing, which lets you buy Night Filter Pro through the Play Store app.
Because the app has no way to send data, we never receive any data from it.
What stays on your phone
The app keeps one thing: its settings. These are:
- whether the filter is on, and its color temperature, intensity and dim;
- whether the auto timer is on, and its start and end times;
- when a pause ends, and when a timer fade started and in which direction;
- whether you've read the explanation shown before covering the status bar;
- with Night Filter Pro: your saved presets, your wind-down settings, and whether the timer follows sunset, with the city you picked from the app's built-in list;
- whether you have Pro, copied from Google Play so Pro works without a connection;
- when you first opened the app, and whether you've closed the card about Pro.
Sunset timing uses your phone's time zone or the city you pick. The app never asks for your location.
The settings are kept in the app's private storage, which other apps can't read. They are left out of Android's cloud backup and out of device-to-device transfers, so they never leave your phone. To delete them, clear the app's storage in Android settings or uninstall the app.
Permissions
The app asks for six permissions, each for one job:
- Display over other apps (
SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW), to draw the filter over your apps. - Run in the foreground (
FOREGROUND_SERVICE), to keep the filter on screen while it's on. - Run in the foreground: special use (
FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USE), the kind of foreground service Android 14 and later asks the app to name. The app names it a screen color filter overlay. - Show notifications (
POST_NOTIFICATIONS), for the notification with Pause and Turn off. - Run at startup (
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED), to turn the filter back on after a restart. - Google Play billing (
com.android.vending.BILLING), to buy Night Filter Pro. It lets the app ask the Play Store app on your phone what you own and open its purchase screen.
None of these lets the app read your data or reach the internet.
The optional Accessibility service
Android only lets an app draw over the status bar, notification shade, quick settings and lock screen through its Accessibility service. If you turn on “Cover status bar and notifications”, the app explains this first, and you then turn the service on yourself in Android's Accessibility settings.
The service is used for that one purpose: it draws the color filter. It does not:
- read, collect or store anything shown on your screen;
- receive accessibility events, or observe what you type;
- tap, swipe or perform any action on your behalf.
It is configured to receive no events and to have no access to window content, and it is not presented as an accessibility tool. Without internet access, nothing could be sent anywhere in any case. You can turn the service off at any time, in the app or in Android's Accessibility settings.
Third parties
The app shares nothing with anyone, because it has nothing to share and no way to send it. It contains no third-party services.
If you buy Night Filter Pro, Google Play handles the purchase, the payment and any refund, under Google's own privacy policy. Google gives us a record of each order, such as its date, price and the buyer's region, so we can keep our accounts and help with refunds. We never see your payment details.
You get the app through Google Play, which handles your Play account and downloads under Google's own privacy policy. Google Play gives us aggregated statistics, such as install counts by country, that don't identify you. If you've allowed your phone to share usage and diagnostics with Google, Google may also show us anonymous crash and performance reports for the app. The app itself plays no part in either.
Children
The app collects no data from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If the app ever changes what it does with data, we'll update this page and its effective date before that version is released. A new permission would be listed here, with its reason.
